Neighbourhoods

Jan Gehl’s blog on Neighbourhood is a useful reminder of the effects of fractured urbanism caused by road infrastructure that causes car dependency with the resulting breakdown in community as well as health issues.  The cause and effects are so blatant, yet it is still so difficult (for road safety reasons) to build new developemnt that accesses directly onto a road.  Reminds me of this awful housing in Trowbridge in Wiltshire, UK, where even the fenestration is blanked from the street.  The answers are staring us in the face and have been around for centuries.
